Dates that matter

Swiss tax deadlines for individuals

Two dates decide most returns, and one of them cannot be extended. The rest is set by your canton.

In detail

What each date means

Deadlines are the one part of Swiss tax where being approximately right is no use at all, so these are stated exactly — and no further than we can stand behind.

31 March — Requesting an ordinary assessment

If you are taxed at source and want the deductions a return brings, the request must reach your canton by 31 March of the following year. This one has no extension: miss it and the year is closed.

31 March — The cantonal tax return, in most cantons

Most cantons expect the return itself by 31 March. Unlike the request above, this deadline can normally be extended — and extensions are routinely granted when asked for in time.

30 days — Objecting to an assessment

From the day the Veranlagungsverfügung reaches you. Comparing it line by line against what was filed is part of our engagement; the window is short and it does not restart.

Your canton — Everything else

Instalment dates, interest on late payment and the exact return deadline are set by your canton, and they differ. Your cantonal tax administration publishes them; we check yours when we take on your return.

Your canton sets its own dates

There are twenty-six cantonal tax administrations and they do not agree on deadlines, extension procedures or instalment dates. The Federal Tax Administration keeps the directory of all of them, which is the authoritative place to check yours.
